How to Grow Mooli (Daikon Radish)

Mooli, also known as Daikon radish, is a fast-growing and versatile crop that thrives in the UK. It’s best sown from late spring to late summer, as this avoids the risk of bolting during cooler months. For smaller roots, sow seeds earlier in the season, while later sowings are ideal for larger, mature roots.

Choose a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil. Avoid freshly manured ground, as this can cause the roots to fork. Prepare the soil thoroughly by removing stones and breaking up clumps to ensure the long roots can grow straight and strong. Sow the seeds thinly in rows, about 1.5 cm deep, with 25–30 cm between rows.

Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them out to approximately 10–15 cm apart. This gives the roots enough space to develop fully. Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the growing period, as this helps the roots grow quickly and prevents them from becoming woody. Regular weeding is also important to minimise competition for nutrients.

Mooli is ready to harvest just 6–8 weeks after sowing. Lift the roots carefully using a fork to avoid breaking them. It’s best to harvest them promptly once they reach the desired size, as leaving them in the ground for too long can lead to splitting or a decline in texture. For a continuous harvest, sow seeds in small batches every couple of weeks during the growing season.
