If you love cooking with fresh herbs, growing your own chervil is a great way to add some unique flavour to your dishes. Here's how to do it:

  1. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot in your garden with well-draining soil. Chervil can tolerate a wide range of soil types, but it prefers a slightly acidic soil with a pH of around 6.5.
  2. Sow the seeds directly in the ground in early spring, as soon as the soil can be worked. Chervil can also be grown as a fall or winter crop in warmer climates.
  3. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and water well. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and avoid overwatering, as chervil is sensitive to root rot.
  4. Thin the seedlings to about 6 inches apart once they have sprouted. This will give the plants enough room to grow and will also improve air circulation, which can help prevent disease.
  5. Fertilise the plants with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, every two to three weeks. This will provide the plants with the nutrients they need to grow and produce flavourful leaves.
  6. Harvest the leaves when they are young and tender, before the plant starts to bolt (produce flowers). You can cut the leaves with scissors, or gently pull them off the stem.

Chervil can be used fresh or dried. To dry the leaves, spread them out on a paper towel and let them air dry for a few days. Once they are completely dry, store them in an airtight container until ready to use.

By following these steps, you can successfully grow your own chervil and enjoy its unique flavour in your cooking.
