Growing Your Moonshine Sweetcorn Seeds

  1. Timing: Plant sweetcorn seeds indoors 2-4 weeks before the last expected frost in your area. This allows seedlings to be ready for transplanting when the weather is suitable.

  2. Seed Starting: Fill seed trays or small pots with a well-draining potting mix. Plant 2-3 seeds per pot, placing them about 1 inch deep. Water well after planting.

  3. Germination: Place the trays or pots in a warm, sunny location. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination usually takes 7-10 days.

  4. Seedling Care: Once the seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, thin them to leave only the strongest plant per pot. Provide ample sunlight or use grow lights if growing indoors.

  5. Transplanting: Transplant seedlings when they are about 6 inches tall and the soil has warmed up. Space plants about 12-18 inches apart in rows separated by 2-3 feet.

  6. Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Work organic matter into the soil and add a balanced fertilizer if needed.

  7. Planting in the Ground: Dig a hole for each seedling, ensuring it is deep enough to accommodate the roots. Place the seedling in the hole and backfill with soil.

  8. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods.

  9. Fertilising: Side-dress with a balanced fertilizer when the plants are knee-high and again when they start to produce ears.

  10. Harvesting: Harvest sweetcorn when the silk turns brown, and the kernels are plump and release a milky substance when punctured.

Follow these steps, and you should be on your way to enjoying homegrown sweetcorn!

I tried to avoid a glut by making 3 sowings of Moonshine in early April, end of April and mid May. This was very successful as Moonshine proved quick and reliable as well as tasty and tender. Had cobs from end of July to end of Sept.
